Fulfilling Our Vision

Full and equal participation of Indigenous people in the digital economy.

Driving Impact Through our Work

Winyama plays a crucial role in promoting cultural preservation, environmental sustainability, and Indigenous rights protection.

Our involvement in heritage and cultural mapping helps document and preserve Indigenous cultural heritage. We collaborate with government agencies, Indigenous groups, and research institutions. Winyama also excels in land and environmental monitoring, addressing environmental concerns by tracking land use and ecological changes.

Our commitment to native title tenure management ensures the legal recognition of Indigenous Australians' traditional land rights, contributing to the protection of Indigenous heritage and equitable land use agreements. Winyama's impact spans these essential areas, fostering a more sustainable and culturally respectful approach to land and heritage management.

As an Indigenous-owned and operated company, Winyama prioritises supporting and collaborating with fellow Indigenous businesses. By doing so, we are able to contribute to the community through the following ways:

Economic empowerment: Our support of Indigenous businesses and organisations helps foster economic growth within the community.

Job creation: By partnering with Indigenous companies, we contribute to the creation of employment opportunities for Indigenous people, promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Cultural preservation: Through our collaborations, we actively empower and give Indigenous people a space to preserve and promote Indigenous cultures, traditions, and knowledge, enriching the fabric of their communities.

Community development: The businesses and organisations we support generate positive social impact, investing in community development projects and initiatives that benefit all residents.

Impact Through our Indigenous Mapping Workshop

The Indigenous Mapping Workshop Australia program greatly impacts Indigenous cultural preservation, land and resources management, education, awareness and economic opportunities. Participants acquire the necessary tools and knowledge to map their traditional lands and resources, empowering Indigenous communities.

Winyama and our growing network of partners are proud to support the growth of the Indigenous tech sector through our various social initiatives.

“We don’t want people to feel like they need to leave their Country to find work in the digital economy; they shouldn’t need to come down to the city. Their work is increasingly moving to apps, drones, and mapping platforms and we need to match our training and education pathways.”

— Andrew Dowding, Managing Director, Winyama

Our Past and Current National IMW Partners

IMW On Demand Community Participation

During the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic, Winyama was one of the first to proactively adapt its learning content and delivery style entirely online. Recognising the need to continue building geospatial capability despite restrictions on in-person gatherings, we swiftly transitioned to a digital-first approach and launched IMW On Demand.

This shift ensured that Indigenous communities and organisations could continue accessing high-quality GIS training, mapping tools, and digital skills development. By leveraging interactive virtual workshops, online resources, and remote support, Winyama upheld its commitment to Indigenous digital inclusion, demonstrating resilience and innovation in the face of unprecedented challenges.

IMW On Demand is a dynamic online learning platform designed to equip Indigenous communities with GIS and mapping skills anytime, anywhere. Over time, it has evolved into a thriving knowledge and community hub, connecting and empowering First Nations mappers across Australia and abroad.

11 Courses Created

We developed 11 diverse courses, covering key topics like Deadly Data, Introduction to Drones, and Using QGIS for Fire Burn Management, all designed to equip Indigenous communities with essential geospatial and digital skills.
