Winyama presents at the AWS Summit Canberra 2022

Last month Winyama presented at Amazon Web Services (AWS) Public Sector Summit in Canberra, which saw partners and customers come together to discuss the innovative ways cloud technology is being used to tackle modern day problems and help organisations achieve their missions.

AWS is the world's most adopted cloud platform, with over 200 AWS services and products available across compute, storage, databases, Internet of Things (IoT), security, applications and more.

Although the main event took place on August 31st, Managing Director, Andrew Dowding, IT Consultant, Tim Cable and, Junior Solutions Architect, Jaden Dzubiel flew to Canberra two days prior to join AWS employees and other AWS partners for the Partner Symposium.

On Tuesday, August 30th, Andrew presented to the Partner Symposium attendees alongside AWS Partner Solutions Architect and Head of First Nations Strategy and Engagement, Michael Hill. Their discussion centred around the topics of Indigenous digital inclusion, the current underrecognition of land management as a ‘tech’ career and how Winyama is using AWS services and products for work relating to the Indigenous estate.

Speaking about Winyama’s heavy investment in Indigenous training programs as a service, Andrew noted that it was just one of the ways the team worked to facilitate the digital inclusion of Indigenous Australians. “The training we provide helps Indigenous rangers begin to understand the digital landscape that is circling around them. In particular, our drone training has extended people to understand drone imagery processing using AWS elastic compute.”

Drones aren’t the only popular technology adoptions ranger groups have made in the last few years. Andrew also spoke about the potential of camera traps, satellite imagery and digitised data processing and data management systems, all of which could be integrated with AWS products and services.

Dowding attributed the increasingly rapid uptake of technology in the regions to the growing ‘connectedness’ of Australia through the internet. Excited by the prospect of 5G he said, “I have high hopes for 5G and satellite broadband to deliver the backbone that is needed to fully realise cloud migration and modernisation in cloud environments.”

On Wednesday, recent hire Junior Solutions Architect, Jaden took the stage with Mike Hill - speaking to over 100 of the Asia Pacific Japan (APJ) AWS leadership team on how he came to join the Winyama team through CareerTrackers and his previous and upcoming internships with AWS.

While in Canberra, Andrew, Tim and Jaden also attended several keynotes and breakout sessions to learn how other organisations are using AWS. After hearing from AWS team, Blair Layton and Saeed Barghi, on how data sharing with Amazon Redshift could be applied to the healthcare sector, Tim was inspired to think about how the same software could be used in land management.

“Blair and Saeed were talking about how Amazon Redshift could be used to keep health data in sync. I can definitely see how being able to share data with a fine grain level of control would be beneficial for some of the clients we work with.”

The team also enjoyed hearing from the AWS and University of Melbourne team on sustainable and smart buildings using AWS IoT and from AWS Solutions Architects Anushree Umesh and Emma Arrigo on building an audio classifier on Amazon SageMaker.

“There’s a lot of rhetoric out there about technology replacing people. From my experience at Winyama, the ranger groups we work with have a limited amount of people. I see technology not as a replacement but as a supplement — a bolster. Technology enables your staff to do more with less.”

- Tim Cable, IT Consultant
