On-Site GIS Support Western Australia’s Public Transport Authority and METRONET
The METRONET program of works is being delivered by the West Australian State Government and is Perth’s single largest public transport investment.
With approximately 72 kilometres of new passenger rail and 23 new stations, METRONET is responsible for building additional public transport and transit-oriented developments in the city’s metropolitan area, turning more than 8,000 hectares of land around new stations into desirable places to live, work and play.
METRONET works closely with the Public Transport Authority (PTA), the primary supplier of public transport services in WA. Between 2020 - 2023 both METRONET and the PTA required reliable and flexible GIS support services. Previously the PTA had outsourced its GIS support which presented the risk of time delays and disruptions to their workflows. Another key factor influencing resourcing for METRONET’s GIS capability is that the work typically comes in peaks and troughs. These short bursts of work previously made it difficult to outsource consistent GIS support.
The Solution
A partnership between METRONET and Winyama alleviated the need for the PTA to continuously outsource GIS professionals, closing the loop on a previously time-consuming process. This arrangement meant that Winyama staff were seconded out to support the Public Transport Authority’s project demand.
The Benefits
This flexible agreement meant that during low periods of work, METRONET could request to reduce the secondment hours, while in peak periods, requests for further support could be arranged.
The documentation produced by Winyama staff was badged as PTA property meaning that it wasn’t required for external review. This helped ensure project delivery could remain on schedule.
