Staff Fulfilment Through the Indigenous Mapping Workshop
NGIS is a leading global geospatial consultancy with a 30-year track record of delivering innovative and impactful geospatial solutions. Responsibility for the future drives innovation at NGIS, with a particular focus on environmental and social responsibility. In 2018, NGIS became a partner of Winyama, and since then, they have given their support to help us achieve our vision of full and equal participation of Indigenous people in the digital economy.
“Investing in communities at the local, national, and global levels is central to who we are at NGIS. It reflects our core belief that geospatial technology should drive positive change, not just for innovation, but for creating a more sustainable and equitable world. Our focus on impact allows us to advance solutions that benefit both people and our environment.”
Paul Farrell, CEO of NGIS
Each year, NGIS gives its team the opportunity to volunteer on company time as Trainers, Training Assistants or Logistical Volunteers at our national workshop. Paul, the CEO of NGIS, sees it as an initiative that deeply aligns with NGIS’ commitment to community, social responsibility and an opportunity for the team to embody their company values. “Our team are passionate about engaging in meaningful projects that make a difference,” he says. “The IMW gives them this opportunity, and also provides an enriching learning experience.”
Teaching geospatial skills at the National IMW 2024
This year, GIS experts from NGIS facilitated training for our QGIS Microcredentialled courses as well as workshops across Earth Observation. Several more of their technical team volunteered as Training Assistants, while their operations team supported Winyama in managing the logistics for the week. Speaking with their team revealed a variety of motivations for getting involved; from a desire to enhance their geospatial skills through training others, learning from industry experts they wouldn’t usually have access to, building their networks, expanding their knowledge of the lands they work on and becoming more involved in their local community.
“I loved connecting with and learning from fellow Trainers and participants. I really enjoyed the lightning rounds at the end of each day.”
Yvonne Fong, NGIS GIS Consultant, Trainer at the National IMW 2024
“I’m a born-and-bred Perth local who’s lived here all my life. That’s why I wanted to come along to this – to learn more about the lands I’m on and to explore how I can integrate the mapping work I do with cultural knowledge.”
Az Vera, NGIS Senior Software Engineer, Training Assistant at the National IMW 2024
“It was great connecting with participants and learning about their lands, knowing that they will apply what they learn in impactful ways, is a very special feeling as a contributor to IMW.”
Paul Farrell, CEO of NGIS
