3D Visualisation Tool Transforms Coongan Cultural Awareness Training
Coongan is a Nyiyaparli family owned and operated organisation that offers archeological surveys, cultural awareness training (CAT) and environmental services to companies working on Nyiyaparli Country. Nyiyaparli land is situated within the East Pilbara region of Western Australia, on the edge of the Western Desert.
Since 2011, approximately 25,000 people working on Nyiyaparli Country have undertaken cultural awareness training and it is now a mandatory practice for people working on these mine sites. When Coongan approached Winyama, their trainers were delivering CAT using PowerPoint presentations. Coongan wanted a solution that:
Was interactive and displayed Indigenous knowledge in a short period of time.
Enabled trainees to ask questions specific to Nyiyaparli land.
Was a source of truth for stories and practices that have been approved by community Elders to share.
The Solution
Winyama designed a 3D tour across Nyiyaparli Country.
The Benefits
The 3D map solution displayed important cultural information like native title boundaries, giving people working on site a contextual understanding of where their mining activities are taking place.
The tool produced is intuitive and easy to use making it accessible to those with basic through to advanced computer literacy skills.
The 3D map solution is owned by Coongan and can be updated by staff at any time to ensure the data displayed is always accurate.
