Winyama hosts first regional Indigenous Mapping Workshop

On 16th, 17th and 18th February, Winyama hosted the first face-to-face Indigenous Mapping Workshop (IMW) Australia since the previous flagship event in 2019. As a part of the new ‘Regional IMW’ program, this pilot event brought together Indigenous Rangers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions’ southwest and midwest regions.

The three day workshop provided free geospatial training on Google Earth Pro, QGIS, Fulcrum, and a live session of our most popular IMW Australia - On Demand course, Deadly Data from course author, Merindah Bairnsfather-Scott.

In this session, attendees learnt the do’s and don’ts of data management, the importance of data governance, and engaged in discussions about Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property, copyright, open data, licenses, Traditional Knowledge labels, and Indigenous Data Sovereignty.

In the Fulcrum workshop sessions, attendees left the training facility to gather field data in real time via a Fulcrum form that was created to collect information on local plant species.

The field collection data was then visualised and mapped using QGIS by the workshop attendees.

The Winyama training team (Andrew Dowding, Merindah Bairnsfather-Scott and Stafford Smith) welcomed special guest and QGIS expert, John Bryant from FOSS4G, into the IMW Australia team of trainers to provide additional support throughout the workshop.

As the author of IMW Australia - On Demand course, Pre burn fire management with QGIS, John was excited to attend and train at an in-person workshop.

“I'll keep my fingers crossed to be invited to the next one.
“I'd love to stay involved and support this important work,” he said.

The workshop concluded with a ‘project time’ session where trainers encouraged attendees to work on their own mapping projects, work through pain points or specific requests, and revisit concepts that were taught earlier in the workshop.
