Boorloo (Perth), 2024
This year’s National Indigenous Mapping Workshop participants could choose from 40 workshops featuring newly introduced topics such as place-naming applications, data ownership agreements, language mapping, and geospatial capability building.
A significant highlight from this year was the launch of our Microcredential, which was created in partnership with Curtin University. The Microcredential, GIS Mapping Skills for First Nation Land Management, enables participants to earn university credits, supporting their education and career advancement in Indigenous Land Management.
Narrm (Melbourne), 2023
Winyama’s first national workshop post-Covid was held at the University of Melbourne’s Southbank Campus, hosted by the Wilin Centre. 82 learners attended from every State in Australia. Workshop participants walked away with knowledge across programs; Google Earth, Google Earth Engine and Google Maps, QGIS, Earth Observation, Fulcrum, Drones, ArcGIS Pro, AGOL, ArcGIS StoryMaps, Survey 123.
This year introduced a stream on Data Sovereignty, which discussed best practice in terms of Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property when capturing and mapping data.
Boorloo (Perth), 2019
After being named the official partner for the Indigenous Mapping Workshop earlier in the year, Winyama expanded the IMW’s training offering, providing education across geospatial softwares; Google, Fulcrum, Mapbox, QGIS and Esri software.
Winyama, in partnership with Dennis Golding, a freelance designer with Google’s Creative Lab, collaborated with workshop participants to develop a set of free Indigenous icons that can be used to represent a range of Indigenous experiences.

Pirrama (Sydney), 2018
Winyama, along with the Firelight Group, Google, Digital Navigators and the University of Technology Sydney ran a pilot Indigenous Mapping Workshop in Australia.
Over 70 participants from across Australia were introduced to a suite of Google’s mapping tools and techniques for sharing their stories and connection to Country.
